Choose how annual contributions are treated in today's-dollar projections.

Keep pace preserves the entered contribution's purchasing power. Fixed nominal keeps the cash amount unchanged, so its real value declines with inflation. Custom applies the increase relative to inflation.

FIRE projections are uncertain and do not guarantee sustainable retirement. Taxes, fees, market sequence, pensions, healthcare, longevity, emergencies, and changing spending require deeper planning.

This estimate is educational and depends entirely on the assumptions entered. It is not financial, tax, insurance, legal, investment, payroll, or energy advice.

Calculator-specific reference checks

These prompts help you review assumptions; they are not universal standards or personal recommendations.

ItemPlanning guidance
Withdrawal rateTest several rates; a constant percentage is a planning shortcut, not a guarantee against depletion.
Real returnThis calculator converts nominal return and inflation into an approximate constant real return.
Annual spendingInclude taxes, healthcare, housing, dependants, irregular replacements, travel, and a contingency allowance.
Savings rateUse investable annual savings divided by gross annual income here; other FIRE communities may define the denominator differently.

Regional planning guide

Use the country pages to match terminology and review the local inputs that most often change the result.

United States

For a United States FIRE scenario, separate taxable brokerage assets from retirement accounts with access restrictions and model health insurance before Medicare. Social Security, taxes, account fees and sequence risk are not calculated here, so test lower returns, higher spending and a withdrawal rate that reflects the planned retirement horizon.

United Kingdom

For a United Kingdom FIRE scenario, separate assets available before pension access from workplace or personal pensions and include a realistic State Pension assumption separately. Model housing, taxes and healthcare-related spending carefully, compare ISA and pension access timing, and stress-test inflation, fees and early poor returns.

Canada

For a Canadian FIRE scenario, separate taxable, TFSA and RRSP assets and model CPP or QPP and OAS income outside this simplified target. Consider provincial taxes, housing and healthcare-related costs, then test a bridge period before public benefits and a lower-return or higher-inflation sequence.

Open country guide

Australia

For an Australian FIRE scenario, separate assets accessible before preservation age from superannuation and model any Age Pension assumption outside this calculator. Include housing, healthcare and tax-sensitive spending, then test the bridge period, investment fees, inflation, sequence risk and a more conservative withdrawal rate.

Estimate a financial-independence target and timeline

Financial Independence, Retire Early planning connects annual spending with an invested-asset target and a savings path. This calculator estimates a FIRE number from spending and withdrawal rate, then grows current savings with annual contributions using an inflation-adjusted return.

FIRE calculation methodology

The FIRE target is annual spending divided by the planned withdrawal rate. When inflation is above zero, the calculator converts the nominal return to a real return using (1 + nominal return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1, then compounds the current invested savings and adds each annual contribution in today's dollars. Keep pace with inflation holds the real contribution constant; fixed nominal contributions lose purchasing power; custom increases are converted to real terms using the same inflation basis. Year 0 is the current savings balance, and the projected FIRE year is the first modeled year whose real balance reaches the target. Results are estimates: returns, inflation, spending, taxes, fees, and market sequences can differ materially.

How to use this calculator

Enter current age, income, spending, invested savings, annual contributions, expected nominal return, inflation, and a withdrawal-rate scenario. Keep savings and spending definitions consistent and use return assumptions after recurring investment fees when possible.

How to interpret the result

The FIRE number is annual spending divided by the entered withdrawal rate. The projected timeline is the first year the modeled real balance reaches that target. Savings rate shows the entered annual saving relative to gross income, not whether the budget is sustainable.

Decision checks

Review healthcare, housing, taxes, dependants, pensions, government benefits, insurance, debt, irregular expenses, longevity, investment allocation, and access restrictions. Plan how spending and work could adapt after poor market returns.

Compare realistic scenarios

Compare lower returns, higher inflation, higher spending, a lower withdrawal rate, and reduced contributions. Also test part-time income or a delayed retirement date outside the calculator if those are realistic fallback options.

Limitations and important context

This projection uses one constant real return and annual contribution rule in today's dollars. It does not model return sequences, taxes, account fees, pensions, government benefits, dynamic withdrawals, changing asset allocation, or unexpected spending. A higher or lower result is not a promise of investment performance or a personalized retirement recommendation.

What these items mean

FIRE number

A planning target often calculated as annual spending divided by an assumed withdrawal rate. It is a rule-of-thumb convention, not a regulatory standard or guaranteed safe balance.

Withdrawal rate

The portion of the portfolio withdrawn in a year. Sustainable outcomes depend on horizon, allocation, fees, taxes, spending flexibility, and the sequence of returns.

Real return

Investment return after accounting for inflation. The exact Fisher equation relates nominal return, real return, and inflation more accurately than simple subtraction.
