Input

The entered effective tax rate is a user-supplied planning assumption. WT Free Tools does not determine your actual tax rate or tax liability.
Advanced Options

Optional date fields refine the holding-period context; tax remains an illustration based on the entered effective rate.

Optional: enter both dates to calculate the holding period from calendar dates. Otherwise, use Holding period (months).

Transaction history

Add acquisitions and disposals in one currency. Entries stay in this browser and are processed in date order. Transactions on the same date are processed in the order shown; this is the tie-breaking assumption.

CSV columns: date, type, quantity, price, fee. Use buy or sell and include no more than 200 rows.

Country context is educational. Enter current quotes, rates, taxes, fees, incentives, and rules from official or licensed local sources before making a decision.

This is a planning estimate, not a tax return. Transaction-history mode processes local browser data and compares cost-basis scenarios, but the selected method may not be permitted in your jurisdiction. Tax treatment, pooling, matching, fees, losses, exemptions, and reporting rules vary by country and tax year.

ItemPlanning guidance
Cost basisUsually starts with acquisition cost plus eligible fees, but rules differ for gifts, mining, staking, transfers, and pooled holdings.
Disposal proceedsUse the market value received minus eligible disposal fees; crypto-to-crypto exchanges may also be taxable disposals.
Holding periodSome jurisdictions distinguish short- and long-term holdings, while others use different discounts, allowances, or pooling rules.
Effective tax rateEnter a scenario rate that reflects your tax position; the calculator does not determine a statutory marginal rate.

Canada

For a Canadian scenario, confirm whether the activity is treated as capital or business income and calculate adjusted cost base consistently across holdings. Include eligible transaction costs and all dispositions, including crypto-to-crypto exchanges, then apply an effective rate based on the taxpayer and province after reviewing current CRA guidance.

Estimate a cryptocurrency capital gain or loss

A realized gain generally begins with disposal proceeds minus the asset's assigned tax cost. Use single-transaction mode for one simplified acquisition and sale, or transaction-history mode to process dated buys and sells locally with an exploratory FIFO, LIFO, HIFO, or average-cost scenario.

How to use this calculator

For one sale, enter quantity, acquisition and disposal prices, fees, and holding period. For transaction history, add rows or import a local CSV with date, type, quantity, price, fee columns, select a cost-basis scenario, and use one consistent currency. Enter an effective tax rate only after checking current local rules.

How to interpret the result

Cost basis and net proceeds show the two sides of the disposal. A negative capital gain is displayed as a loss and receives no automatic tax benefit because loss offsets, carry rules, allowances, and ordering differ widely.

Decision checks

Confirm which tax lot was disposed of, whether pooling or identification rules apply, and whether transfers, staking, mining, airdrops, gifts, forks, or crypto purchases created separate reportable events. Reconcile the result with exchange records and wallet transactions.

Compare realistic scenarios

Compare FIFO, LIFO, HIFO, and average-cost results without changing the transaction history, but use only the method allowed by the relevant authority. Compare effective tax rates separately and reconcile remaining quantity, fees, transfers, and every disposal with source records.

Limitations and important context

Transaction-history mode models buys and sells only. It does not implement specific identification evidence, UK share-pooling and same-day matching, Canadian superficial-loss adjustments, US wash-sale treatment, foreign-currency conversion, transfers between wallets, income events, exemptions, loss carryovers, or statutory return forms. Short- and long-term splits are planning classifications, not jurisdictional determinations.

Check current jurisdiction rules directly: the US IRS digital-assets guidance, UK HMRC cryptoassets collection, Canada Revenue Agency's cryptocurrency guide, and the Australian Taxation Office's crypto-asset guidance.

Trust and methodology

Methodology: acquisition fees are included in cost basis, disposal fees reduce net proceeds, and tax is illustrated only on a positive realized gain using the entered effective rate.
Purpose: Educational crypto transaction-planning estimate

Results are educational estimates, not tax advice or tax-preparation output. Jurisdiction-specific cost-basis, disposal matching, loss, and reporting rules may differ.

What these items mean

Cost basis

The tax cost assigned to the disposed asset under the applicable local method. It can include eligible acquisition costs but is not always the same as cash originally deposited.

Realized gain

The difference recognized when an asset is disposed of. An unrealized market increase is normally different because no disposal has yet occurred, subject to local rules.

Tax lot

A group of units acquired in one transaction or treated together under tax rules. Lot-identification conventions determine which cost is matched to a disposal.
