United States

For a United States comparison, obtain quotes for the same drivers, vehicles, garaging address, mileage, liability limits, collision and comprehensive coverage. Enter the full annual premiums and deductible difference, then check state minimums, exclusions, installment fees and whether discounts are already included before treating the result as savings.

Open country guide

United Kingdom

For a United Kingdom comparison, keep the vehicle, named drivers, use class, annual mileage, no-claims history and coverage type identical. Compare compulsory and voluntary excess together, include cancellation or adjustment fees, and review add-ons such as legal expenses, breakdown assistance and replacement-car terms before switching.

Open country guide

Canada

For a Canadian comparison, use quotes based on the same province, driver record, vehicle, annual distance, liability limit, collision, comprehensive and deductible. Provincial insurance systems differ, so confirm mandatory coverage, public-versus-private arrangements, endorsements and cancellation terms with the relevant insurer or regulator.

Open country guide

Australia

For an Australian comparison, distinguish compulsory third-party cover from third-party property, fire and theft, or comprehensive insurance. Compare the same drivers, usage, agreed or market value, excesses and optional benefits, and include cancellation costs or lost discounts before relying on the first-year saving.

How to compare car insurance savings fairly

A lower premium is valuable only when the new policy protects the same risks on acceptable terms. This estimator focuses on actual premiums you have received and makes switching costs and deductible differences visible beside the headline saving.

How to use this calculator

Enter the current and quoted annual premiums from policy documents or written quotes. Add any cancellation or switching fee and record both deductibles or excess amounts. The result separates recurring annual savings from the first-year amount after switching costs.

How to interpret the result

Positive first-year savings means the quoted premium difference exceeds the switching cost. A larger quoted deductible may still leave you worse off after a claim, so consider the deductible difference alongside the premium percentage rather than treating it as a direct equivalent.

Decision checks

Compare named drivers, vehicle use, annual mileage, garaging address, liability limits, collision and comprehensive terms, replacement-car benefits, roadside assistance, and exclusions. Confirm the quote remains valid and that every material fact supplied to the insurer is accurate.

Compare realistic scenarios

Compare an equal-coverage quote first, then test a higher deductible separately. Consider a claims-free year, one claim near the deductible, and the next renewal price so a short introductory discount does not dominate the decision.

Limitations and important context

The calculator does not estimate premiums from age, postcode, driving record, credit information, vehicle data, or insurer underwriting. Only insurers or authorized comparison services with current rating data can produce a meaningful quote.

Use the NAIC auto insurance consumer guidance and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission's Moneysmart car insurance guide to review coverage and excesses before switching.

What these items mean

Premium

The amount charged for the policy period. Premiums reflect insurer-specific underwriting, cover, location, vehicle, driver, discounts, taxes, and fees.

Deductible or excess

The policyholder's share of an eligible claim before or alongside insurer payment. Terminology differs by market, but its purpose is similar.

Equivalent coverage

A comparison in which material limits, deductibles, drivers, uses, and exclusions match closely enough for the premium difference to be meaningful.
